ISLAMABAD: Murree Incidents Today. At least 20 to 25 people died in Murree after intense snowfall turned the popular tourist hill resort into a slippery mess, stranding thousands of vehicles which led to consequent higher road congestion. Meanwhile, the federal government has announced the deployment of personnel from the Pakistan Army, Rangers and Frontier Corps to help civil institutions cope with the situation.

The federal government has deployed the personnel of the Pakistan Army and other civil-armed forces for rescue operations as 21+ tourists died in their vehicles in Murree due to heavy snowfall in the hill station. All the routes in Murree were blocked after thousands of vehicles entered the city, leaving the tourists helpless on the roads.

Islamabad and Rawalpindi’s commissioners, deputy commissioners, police, are carrying out rescue operations. The interior minister said five platoons of the Pakistan Army have been called in for rescue efforts, while Rangers and Frontier Corps will be deployed on an emergency basis.

As many as 5,000+ vehicles have been stuck since night some have been evacuated. 20 to 25 deaths took place in cars. The locals provided food and blankets to the stranded people. The interior minister said the authorities would evacuate all 5000+ vehicles by today evening, while the roads would remain closed to Murree till tomorrow 9pm.

We have also decided to ban tourists who are planning on coming to Murree by walk; this is not the time to come to Murree,” Rasheed said.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, responding to the incident, said: “Shocked and upset at tragic deaths of tourists on road to Murree. unprecedented snowfall and rush of people proceeding without checking weather conditions caught district administration unprepared.

In a heartbreaking incident, at least 19 tourists stranded in their vehicles succumbed to the extreme weather during a snowstorm in Murree on Friday night, said Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid on Saturday.

According to the minister who arrived in Murree to monitor the rescue operation, hundreds of vehicles were stranded in Murree whereas over 23,000 vehicles have been rescued. The tragic incident was brought to attention after several posts and videos about the same started circulating on social media.

The town attracts well over half a million tourists each year. It broke all records in 2020 when it welcomed over 1.2 million tourists following the removal of restrictions imposed in the wake of the first wave of coronavirus. But, in his video message, Ahmed said that this time, Murree witnessed tourists in such large numbers after a gap of “15 to 20 years, which created a big crisis” for the local administration.
